Juliana VanderMey, P.H.Ec.

My name is Juliana VanderMey and I want to thank the Ottawa HEA for sponsoring my New Grad membership to OHEA. I grew up in the city of Mississauga, Ontario and moved to London, Ontario to pursue a degree in Foods and Nutrition at Brescia University College, affiliate of Western University. I have recently graduated with a BScFN Honours Specialization in Nutrition and Dietetics and a Minor in Psychology.
I will be returning to Brescia to pursue a Professional Diploma in Dietetic Education and Practical Training in May of 2017 to pursue my dream of becoming a Registered Dietitian. Upon graduating from this degree, I hope to get into nutrition education to help increase awareness on various nutrition issues and the policies and guidelines associated with them.

My passions are not just limited to nutrition. I have always been very involved in music, playing Piano for 14 years and Baritone and Trombone for 4 years. This passion for music got me involved in Western's Marching Band as a Trombonist.

Outside of school I am an avid budgie breeder, having raised around 20 chicks since starting off. Coincidentally, my nutrition degree came in handy with this as a breeding hen and her chicks require specific diets for optimal health and growth.

Overall, I am a very proud alumna of Brescia, and am honoured to be accepted into the Ontario Home Economics Association. I hope to do great things with not only the RD designation, but also the PHEc designation.

Anna Tvinnereim, P.H.Ec.

My name is Anna Tvinnereim. I graduated from Uppsala University, Sweden,
BSc in Home Economics, Nutrition & Education.
Food has always played a major part in my life. While living in New York City, I was the Head Chef for the Swedish Consul General. While raising a young family in Portland, OR I taught cooking classes to young and old. Usually with a focus on Scandinavian cooking and baking.

For the past 9 years I have owned and operated the
Beaches Bakeshop, located in the Upper Beaches, Toronto. Many kids have gone through my Taste-Buddies Cooking Classes at Beaches Bakeshop. There is nothing better than “waking up sleeping tastebuds” and encouraging young and old to try new foods and spread the love of cooking and eating!

In my spare time, away from the cafe, I divide my time between family, running, hot yoga, friends, cross country skiing & traveling to name a few of my interests.

Grant Vander Burg, P.H.Ec.

My name is Grant Vander Burg and I am from Lancaster, ON, a small, rural farming community. I completed my BSc Foods and Nutrition, as well as my P.H.Ec. credentialing, at Western University in London, ON.
From there I went on to complete my MSc Human Nutrition at McGill University with my research focusing on how the food environment affects nutrition status in at-risk populations, such as youth and seniors. I am currently seeking home economics related work in Toronto and am also strongly considering going back to school to complete my B.Ed. and become a Home Economics teacher at the secondary level.

Judy Fricker, P.H.Ec.

It is an honor to be a member of the OHEA and to have achieved the status as a P.H.Ec.
I have worked in the field of home economics for 38 years in many interesting roles.  This shows the possible variety offered in our careers as Home Economists.
Presently, I am a healthy lifestyle coordinator with North York Community House.  I facilitate cooking, nutrition and goal setting workshops with children, youth, adults and seniors, at our site in NW Toronto, and other locations in our community.  For 4 years,  I was responsible for the culinary training of newcomers and the operation of our social purpose enterprise, a catering company called "Delightfully Yours Catering".  This fall, I will also be partnering with a dietician to offer a cooking workshop for those with decreased kidney function, and I will also be facilitating  a menopause workshop and a retirement readiness forum.

In the past, I have done food equipment demonstrations, taught cooking skills to school age children with the "Toronto District School Board", and facilitated gourmet cooking with "Toronto Parks and Recreation".

Thank you to my fellow home economists for their encouragement and for the membership experience and opportunities within the THEA and the OHEIB.

It is with pride that I will continue to facilitate and coordinate programs which benefit our community citizens.

Laurie also has an extensive background in chocolate confectionary and flavour applications.  In 2013 Laurie completed a post graduate certificate in Food Security from the Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson.  During her Food Security studies Laurie had the opportunity to volunteer in the advocacy office and community gardening with the Daily Break Food Bank.  Laurie has a passion for food literacy, cooking and local food and proudly uses her new official PHEc designation!

Kayla Edwards

I am a recent graduate from the University of Western Ontario with a B.A. in Psychology and a Major in Family Studies. I am passionate about helping people, and the betterment of the world as a whole.

My hobbies include writing, tea drinking, traveling and baking, with a new found interest in cooking and recipe creation.
To me, Family Studies is very important because family is the foundation of everything, and a good foundation is the key to a good life. Currently I am in the process of a Human Resources graduate program.

Angela Piaskoski

I achieved a Bachelor Arts in Geography from Algoma University and a Post Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Sault College.  I worked as a GIS Analyst for Health and Human services at the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre where my interest in Public Health was first born.
I later pursued my Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University and worked at Algoma University in student and faculty support roles for a number of years.  I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition with a specialization in Nutrition and Dietetics at Brescia University College.  I am currently in my third year and upon graduating I hope to combine my skills in geography and GIS, education and nutrition in a future career in public health research.

I am from Mississauga originally and now live in Toronto. I have a Bachelors of Science in Psychology degree from the University of Western Ontario, which I completed in 2010. After working in Human Resources for a couple of years, I decided to go back to school with the aim of becoming a dietitian.
I spent three years at Ryerson completing my Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition and Food and graduated in June 2015. I am now in my second year of my Masters of Public Health -Nutrition and Dietetics program at the University of Toronto. After completing my program I hope to work as a Community/Public Health Dietitian. I have a particular interest in the School Food Environment. In my free time I enjoy running, playing tennis, reading and watching Netflix!
