Local Food Week in Ontario is June 1-7, 2026! By choosing local, it can strengthen communities and the economy. Farm & Food Care Ontario invites you to share what local looks means to you: whether it’s supporting farms and food businesses or using Ontario ingredients in meals. Participate by using Local Food Week graphics and the #loveONfood on social media.

Former OHEA President Inducted into Middlesex County Agricultural Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Peggy O’Neil, former member and OHEA President for being inducted into the Middlesex County Agricultural Hall of Fame!  

Peggy is an Assistant Professor at Western (Faculty of Health Sciences) as well as a radio producer and host of Food for the Future podcast at Global News. Her work and efforts in advocating for food literacy have led to the Food Literacy for Students Act.  ​

Please join us in celebrating Peggy’s accomplishment! She will be inducted on June 7th at 2 pm at the Western Fair district, in the lobby of the J-AAR Expo Centre. Contact Hugh Fletcher at 519-666-1572, [email protected] for more information and tickets.

Textile Museum of Canada Welcomes New Executive Director  
Urmi Desai has been appointed as Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada. After the museum’s temporary closure in February 2025 due to financial difficulties post-COVID, Desai has proved to be a strong leader in reviving the Museum: “Her leadership has helped position the Museum for recovery and greater long-term stability...”

A reset in the frozen food aisle | Séverine Lavoie for Food in Canada
Do you have staples in the frozen aisle? Nestle’s exit from the frozen meals and pizza category in 2023 has retailers innovating to meet consumer needs and gain market share. “Frozen meals used to be seen as a backup option...Now it’s becoming a first-choice option, especially when it delivers the comfort and quality you’d normally expect from a restaurant, but you can have it ready in minutes at home...”

Manitoba Based Farm to School Program raises $100,000 but Plans for Shutdown
Peak of the Market’s Farm to School program raised $100,000 for Manitoba schools, and community organizations in 2025-2026. The program enables facilities to sell produce and keep 50% of proceeds to invest in upgrades and community programs. It is an initiative that promotes healthy eating in kids and supports Manitoba farmers. However, The Manitoba Association of Home Economists (MAHE) announces the closure of the program starting June 30th, 2026 due to changes in funding and potentially tariff tensions. How will this impact stakeholders involved?  ​

Canada Strong Pass Makes Summer Travelling Easier for Youth and Families  
From June 19th to September 7th, 2026 Canadians and visitors can explore Canada at discounted rates. Perks include free admission or discounts to national parks, national or provincial museums and galleries, and VIA Rail for children and young adults aged 18 to 24. This is not a physical pass to purchase, just check whether certain sites are participating in this initiative. For more details on these benefits, check out their website.
