July 5, 1922 - October 16, 2022 The death occurred peacefully at the Kings County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, October 16, 2022 of the Honourable Doris Margaret Anderson of St. Peter’s, age 100 years. She was born on the family farm in St. Peter’s on July 5, 1922. Loving sister of Dr. Alan Anderson and sister-in-law of Kathleen Anderson, Ann Anderson and Merrijoy Kelner. Treasured “Aunt Do” of 13 nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by her parents William and Florence (MacSwain) Anderson, brothers Ken, twin David, Don, Dr. Robert N. (Marion), nephew Dr. John Anderson, and former sister-in-law Doris H. (McCubbin) Anderson.
She attended Prince of Wales College and graduated from Acadia University with a BSc in 1944 and from Cornell University with an MSc in 1951. She founded the Home Economics program at UPEI where she was a professor from 1969 until 1988. In 1994, she was named professor emeritus. Doris was a founding member of the PEI chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1982, in recognition of her expertise in celiac disease and her contribution to education and mental health in PEI. She was appointed to the Senate of Canada and served from 1995-1997. She was conferred an Honourary Doctorate of Science by Acadia University, her alma mater, in 1997. She was an avid gardener, a political junkie, a sports fan extraordinaire and a lifelong admirer of the Royal Family, especially Queen Elizabeth II. She lived a long life full of accomplishments, and she will be remembered by all who knew her for her unlimited kindness and unwavering generosity. Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Funeral Friday at 2:00 p.m. in St. Peter’s United Church. Interment in Midgell Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Thursday from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. and on Friday at St. Peter’s United Church from 12:30 until the time of service.
