On March 24, 2018 the Ontario Home Economics Association held their 39th annual conference at Brescia University College in London, Ontario. The theme this year was “Reinventing Home Economics.” The conference promised to provide a full day of professional development, networking and fun, it certainly delivered. As a fourth year Nutrition and Dietetics student, I was very excited to witness the profession of Home Economics and get a sense of what opportunities I can explore upon graduation. OHEA brought in a diverse set of speakers covering topics such as how to build healthy communities, tips to get your finances on track, and why a career in food policy might be for you. As a student, I enjoyed listening to each speaker’s insight and passion. The speakers truly demonstrated how much the field of Home Economics is growing, showing all the different areas there are to experience. In addition to the speakers, panel discussions were held. I found both of the panel discussions to be incredibly well done and in some cases moving. There were plenty of networking opportunities present at the conference. It was amazing to be able to discuss the field with those who are thriving in it, as well as to speak with fellow students who are also eager to become Professional Home Economists. The raffles, exhibits and free conference goody bags were a very nice touch to top it off! Overall, I found the conference very inspiring. Being surrounded by such interesting, accomplished individuals really helped to solidify that I am going into the right profession. Looking forward to coming back next year!
