I have also been involved in several writing projects developing resources for teachers, reviewing Family Studies textbooks and writing on-line courses. I have taught various courses in Family Studies but my area of focus is Nutrition and Health. I have a passion for cooking and travel and share this with my students in the classroom every day! I have always felt close to the Home Economics field as cooking/ baking with my mother and grandmother is what initially sparked my interest in food and nutrition (I was probably stirring cake batter before I could walk haha). Looking forward to interacting with all of you! I am passionate about promoting food literacy in children, family research, and family policy in Canada. I look forward to a future with the Ontario Home Economics Association, and getting to know other members! I've done lots of volunteer work with various organizations, including teaching elementary school lessons about nutrition and healthy eating and assisting with children’s gardens and group cooking classes in the community. I really enjoy cooking and trying new recipes in my spare time. In addition, I love to sing and have been a member of the Amabile Choirs of London Canada for 13 years, and have traveled to compete in Newfoundland, Hawaii, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Austria with the Choir. I am really enjoying the Foods and Nutrition Program at Brescia, and my goal for the future is to acquire an internship and pursue the Registered Dietitian designation as well as the Professional Home Economist designation. Regardless if I become an RD or not, I plan to work within the food service sector because food is my passion! I am excited to join OHEA to meet other members who may share the same passion as me and hope to collaborate on exciting programs/initiatives one day!

I am a graduate of the nutrition program at Ryerson, a Professional Home Economist, and Chef. During my time at Ryerson I was not exposed to the profession of Home Economics at all. Like a lot of first and second year students reading this, I was not aware that the profession was thriving and that you could register as a Professional Home Economist in Ontario. Not until the fourth and final year of my undergraduate degree did I learn about Home Ec and what it’s all about. I want to save you all the time I lost my first three years, and share with you my story and why I think YOU should become a student member, and how it can benefit you! "Growing up in Southwestern Ontario I remember the little peach tree in my grand parents' back yard. I always looked forward to the sweet and juicy, fresh-picked fruit from their tree. The fabulous fresh peach flavours, combined with salmon, make this a very special recipe to me."-Emily OHEA members we want YOU, and your culinary skills! OHEA members were encouraged to bring feminine hygiene products to #OHEA2017 to help support Tampon Tuesday. We were very touched by the positive response and would like to thank all conference delegates for their generous donations.
On March 29th, OHEA President Cindy Hartman, P.H.Ec., delivered two large boxes full of feminine hygiene products to the London Food Bank on behalf of OHEA. Ontario, (March 13, 2017) – On March 25th at the Holiday Inn Guelph Hotel and Conference Centre, the Ontario Home Economics Association (OHEA) will transform the future of home economics. Geared to attract Professional Home Economists, Dietitians, Nutritionists, bloggers and university students, OHEA’s 38th annual conference promises a full day of professional development, networking, inspiration and fun for delegates, speakers and sponsors.
The jam packed agenda includes dynamic speakers, skill exchange breakout sessions, a student focused panel discussion, award presentations and plenty of time to network, visit exhibits and participate in the popular silent auction and raffle. Keynote Speaker - Bobby Umar - Executive leadership coach, authority on personal branding and TEDx speaker will kick-off the day with a strong dose of inspiration and authentic connection. Four Ryerson delegates had the pleasure of attending the 2017 ACHES conference at Brescia University College. Along with almost fifty other students, we were able to learn about becoming agents of change, which was the theme of this conference. We were able to hear from many inspiring speakers on their journey towards becoming a change maker.
Delegates were given the opportunity to connect with these professionals in a personal way during the Ontario Home Economics Association (OHEA) and London Home Economics Association (LHEA) Networking Dinner and Mixer on Friday evening. Here are a few words that our Ryerson Delegates had to say about the conference: |
The Ontario Home Economics Association, a self-regulating body of professional Home Economists, promotes high professional standards among its members so that they may assist families and individuals to achieve and maintain a desirable quality of life. Categories
