Registered Member

The following equivalencies, as defined by the Board of Directors, will be considered for Registered Member status:

Interim Professional Home Economist Program (click here for details) The IPHE Program, which was launched in May 2007, establishes one more vehicle by which candidates for Registered membership can meet the OHEA criteria, in addition to the current university course on the philosophy and practice of home economics and OHEA’s self-study course, “Introduction to Home Economics – Philosophy & Practice”. However, it will still be necessary for candidates to have a degree in home economics or its equivalent, as defined by the Board of Directors, from a recognized university or polytechnic institute.

  • Holds a degree in the field of home economics or its equivalent from a recognized university
  • Has proof of a credit course or equivalent in the Philosophy and Practice of Home Economics. OHEA’s Self Study Course or a Masters or Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Home Economics is considered an equivalent
  • Agrees in writing to adhere to the Code of Ethics of the Association
  • Has the right to use the designation "Professional Home Economist"
    • Masters or Ph.D. in the field of home economics or its equivalent; or
    • A minimum of 10 years’ work experience in the field of home economics or its equivalent.

Provisional Member
  • Has the appropriate academic qualifications for registered status but lacks the course in the Philosophy and Practices of Home Economics or Interim Professional Home Economist Program requirement;
  • Must be enrolled in OHEA's Self Study Course
 Introduction to Home Economics – Philosophy and Practice (click here for details)

A self-study course, Introduction to Home Economics – Philosophy and Practice, is available for those who wish to become Registered members but lack the necessary requirements. Those with degrees in home economics from foreign universities are required to take the self-study course to qualify.

Associate Member
  • Does not qualify for registered status
  • Has a diploma in the field of home economics or is engaged in the practice of home economics

Student Member
  • Is enrolled at a Canadian university, faculty, college or school eligible to send voting members to the Association of Canadian Home Economics Students Conference , OR
  • Is enrolled full-time in graduate study in the field of home economics, a post degree faculty of education program or a dietetic internship.

Retired Member
  • Has been a member in good standing for a minimum of five years
  • Is not deriving income from any Home Economics-related activities
  • Specifically requests retirement status.

Active Retired Member
  • Has been a member in good standing for a minimum of five years
  • Has retired from a full-time position but is deriving part-time income from a Home Economics-related activity averaging 15 hours per week
  • Specifically requests active retirement status.
Corresponding Member
  • Has been a member in good standing for a minimum of five years
  • Is not deriving income from any Home Economics-related or other activities
  • Specifically requests corresponding member status. Note: Corresponding members may not use the P.H.Ec. designation nor have voting privileges.
 Individual Affiliate Member
  • An individual who works in and has an interest in and/or supports the purpose and mission of the Association but who does not meet the criteria of the other membership classes.
  • An individual affiliate members shall be entitled to attend meetings of the Association but shall not have voting privileges and shall not be eligible for appointive or elective office nor use the title and designation.


Affiliate Organization Member
  • Any organization that has an interest in and supports the objectives of the Association;
  • An Affiliate member may designate an official representative (who shall not use the P.H.Ec. designation, unless the representative is a Registered member of OHEA in their own right) to hold its membership and to attend meetings but shall not have voting privileges.
Honorary and Honorary Life Members
  • The Board of Directors may confer Honorary Life membership on any current or previous Registered member of the Association which it wishes to honour in accordance with established criteria. An Honorary Life Member shall pay no dues, but may use the P.H.Ec. designation.
  • The Board of Directors, by unanimous vote, may confer Honorary membership to a non-member who has rendered valuable service to the field of home economics or its equivalent. An Honorary Member shall pay no dues and shall not use the P.H.Ec. designation.
