News University of Manitoba student elected to Board of Directors at prominent global food association Chamali Kodikara is used to making a difference. Whether that’s as a graduate student in Agriculture and Agri-food in the Department of Food Science at the University of Manitoba, identifying bioactive compounds in Canadian Prairie berries using advanced techniques at the Canadian Center for Agri-food Research in Health and Medicine, or serving as the President of the Graduate Students Association at the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba. Now, she is taking an important next step in her food journey after being elected to the Board of Directors for the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA).

Colossal Cookbook Sale (Toronto) For many years, CHC has been accepting donated Canadian and historical cookbooks, including rarities, antiques and collections from some noted culinary researchers like Dorothy Duncan and Mary Williamson. Before COVID, we used to bring a selection to several live events each year, but now, after several years without live events, we're going to offer the entire library in a public sale at the Ralph Thornton Community Centre at 765 Queen Street East. The Next Home Economics Symposium 2025 The planned tentative date for the symposium is February 28th through March 2, 2025. It is coming back to Ontario and will likely be in Hamilton OR Toronto. More information to come as more is confirmed. For those who do not know, the Canadian Symposium provides a forum for sharing information, research, and action planning to strengthen home economics/family studies/human ecology/family and consumer science education in the future.
OHEA Grow Ontario Strategy Feedback OHEA was honoured to give feedback on the 2023 Grow Ontario Strategy. In reply to the request of what to take forward to the Federal, Provincial, Territorial (FPT) Meeting in July 2024, OHEA made this recommendation.

Opportunities & Call for Abstracts/Awards: Funding announcement for secondary analysis of data relevant to family diversities and wellbeing The Vanier Institute is now accepting funding applications for secondary data analysis of Statistics Canada and other national-level datasets with potential to advance understanding of family diversities and family wellbeing in Canada. Congratulations to the 2023 Student Incentive Award Winner Congratulations toEmalee Murphy! Emalee is the acting student liaison for the board of OHEA for the 2023-2024 academic year, and was featured in our speaker series where she discussed the future of home economics. Emalee is in her final year of the BSc of Foods and Nutrition program at Brescia University College (BUC), where she is the President of the Student’s Human Ecology Association. She plans to specialize in agricultural advancement research.

New opportunity: Travel funding for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows The Vanier Institute will offer eight travel grants of $750 each to support the participation of doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows at conferences where their research has been accepted for presentation. Research must be related to family diversities or family wellbeing in Canada. A formal announcement of the funding opportunity and an application form will be posted in February. Knowledge mobilization opportunity The Vanier Institute will be hosting Julia Sauter, a postdoctoral fellow from Oslo Metropolitan University, during the first two weeks of May 2024. One of her fellowship goals is to enhance knowledge mobilization skills. They are looking for a scholar whose focus is in the area(s) of step-families, older adults, and/or older families and who wishes to mobilize their research findings. Julia will be creating an Issue Brief (similar to a Policy Brief document), outlining the key issues and recent findings from studies of families in Canada. If you are eager to have your findings shared on the Vanier platform in an easily accessible format, please contact Margo Hilbrecht (mhilbrecht@vanierinstitute.ca).

Projects in Canada that provide information to the public on topics related to food, general nutrition, or general consumer information, and that involve a home economist or professional in a related field will be considered. Canadian Home Economics Foundation General Grants and Awards Available Do you have a plan for a project, a speaker, to prepare educational materials or need funds for a specific activity? CHEF has general funds, as well as several funds designated to special areas, available. A home economist/human ecologist must be involved in the project. Details about the grants and awards available and the application information can be found here. The Foundation is dedicated to improving quality of life to individuals and families by providing financial assistance to home economics professionals in carrying out research, developing educational tools, and in conducting public service projects, and to support post-secondary education related to the profession.
