As a subject association that deals specifically with the teaching of nutrition, healthy eating and/or food and beverage preparation, The Ministry of Education is seeking feedback from OHEA members involved in education on the School Food and Beverage policy with a short survery.
OHEA President Amy Snider-Whitson's media release on the new policy garnered nation-wide attention earlier this year.
Members are encouraged to complete this 10 minute survey HERE which closes December 23, 2011.

Dietitians of Canada and GS1 Canada have teamed up to make it easier for Canadians to get the ‘nutrition facts’ on the foods they eat. A new website, Eatwise.ca lets you look up common foods and view the nutrients they contain. Making data available about brand foods as marketed in Canada is a unique contribution. Nutrition information is provided for the nutrients listed on the Nutrition Facts table found on food labels including: calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fibre, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron.

With the renewed popularity of seasonal, local eating and the desire to prepare healthy foods at home, many Canadians are looking to home canning to preserve food for later use. However, if home canned foods are not properly prepared, they can cause serious illness such as botulism. Health Canada would like to remind Canadians of the importance of good food safety practices while home canning.

Last week, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and partner organizations of the Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance, launched a campaign called Make Ontario the Healthiest Province in Canada.
The following video entitled 'Ontario Not as Healthy as Other Provinces in Canada' recommends bringing back home economics and food education as part of a $171 million campaign to make Ontario the healthiest province in Canada.
