Education

OHEA strives to assist home economists in obtaining suitable employment that builds upon the knowledge and skills achieved with their university degrees in Home Economics, Human Ecology, Family Studies, Foods and Nutrition, or similar.

Home economists specialize in such areas as clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, family development, financial management, consumer advocacy, and housing and furnishings.

This expertise can lead to employment in the corporate world, governments, education, research, food service, dietetics, hospitality, and consumer affairs, to name but a few.

OHEA has conducted a project to identify the skills required both for traditional and non-traditional jobs in a home economics-related career path. The following presentation entitled "Home Economics Careers in Transition" by Marilee Fazil, former Executive Director of the Canadian Home Economics Association, contains her initial research and findings for a project commissioned by OHEA profiling traditional and non-traditional careers in home economics.

OHEA Professional Practice Course

OHEA is accepting registration for its self-study course Introduction to Home Economics –Philosophy and Practice. The course is designed for those wishing to become Professional Home Economists in Ontario and who have not the necessary professional requirement for a credit course or equivalent on the philosophy and practice of home economics as part of their undergraduate education. The course will be of interest to current members who wish to review and update their knowledge of the home economics practice and philosophy. OHEA recognizes that professional practice depends on what each individual brings to that practice. What we do depends very much on who we are, the way we work with others, the values and beliefs that guide our practice. An important part of being and becoming a professional is to become conscious of who we are, what assumptions and beliefs guide us, how we perceive others and our relationships with them, and what has influenced us as we traveled to this point, at this time, in this place. For further information see the back of the application (see link below).
